King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), a multinational Hong Kong-based law firm, will be lending its expertise to start-ups incubating at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Hatchery+ accelerator.

According to KWM global managing partner Sue Kench, one of the firm’s strategic priorities is having a mindset of innovation, and the partnership with the Hatchery will expose the firm’s lawyers to entrepreneurship.

“Collaboration is critical to accelerating our innovation agenda, which is why the partnership with UTS Hatchery+ is so exciting,” says Kench. “It will give our people a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in innovation and expose them to new ways of thinking.”

The Hatchery provides UTS start-ups with access to mentors, entrepreneurial education, funding and other crucial resources. KWM will run seminars there and offer one-on-one legal support to start-ups.

“One of the most difficult aspects of launching a start-up is navigating the myriad of legal documents you need in place to reduce the risks of doing business,” says Joe Allen, program manager at the Hatchery. “It can be an expensive process which can kill a start-up before it has begun.”
