Leading Canadian seed stage fund Real Ventures is partnering with Front Row Ventures, Canada’s first student-led venture capital fund, to support university-based entrepreneurship.

Over the next four years, Real Ventures will provide Front Row with $600,000 CAD to invest in $25,000 increments into Montreal-based, student-run start-ups. Real Ventures will also help Front Row source companies, make investment decisions and support portfolio start-ups.

“University communities produce vast amounts of intellectual capital — ideas and technologies that are critical fuel for the creation of new businesses,” reads a statement from Real Ventures. “As investors, we have long benefited from the economic energy created by universities; with Front Row Ventures, we now have a strong platform to engage with and contribute to these communities while building bridges across campuses.”

In addition to funding high-potential student start-ups, the partnership is intended to grow start-up ecosystems within university communities. Real Ventures will help Front Row accomplish this through events, training programs and advocacy.

“Over the past year we have been continually impressed by [Front Row’s] ability to craft a compelling vision, rally others to their cause and gather support from the ecosystem,” Real Ventures says. “We look forward to working with them and the team they have assembled to help support the next crop of student founders.”
