Chicago’s Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science last week announced the formation of a new Brain Science Institute and three supporting research centers, all to be located in the university’s Innovation and Research Park. The new institute and its centers are an outgrowth of key areas of research conducted at the university related to major brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and anxiety disorders, in addition to brain stem cell research.

“We are creating a pathway and structure for enhanced collaboration with the bioscience industry,” said Executive Vice President for Research Dr. Ronald Kaplan. “Our expectation is that the Brain Science Institute and centers will create a synergistic environment for collaboration with the goal of accelerating the development of desperately needed diagnostics and therapeutics.”

The new research institute will encompass these three new centers:

  • Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases and Therapeutics, led by director Grace “Beth” Stutzmann, a leading Alzheimer’s and traumatic brain injury researcher.
  • Center for Brain Function and Repair, under the direction of William N. Frost, an expert on the function of neural networks.
  • Center for Stress Resilience and Psychiatric Disorders, led by Janice H. Urban, a renowned researcher who’s work focuses on stress as a major causal factor in psychiatric conditions.

In addition to housing the Brain Science Institute and its research centers, the research park, expected to open in summer 2019, will offer space for industry collaborations in key disease areas.
