Executive Director, Research Park Act Corporation & Director Of Venture Development, New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology



STARTING RATE or SALARY RANGE: Negotiable depending on expertise

Employees being promoted to a higher classified position receive the minimum for the position or a pay rate adjustment of 8% whichever is greater.

This position will serve as the Executive Director of the New Mexico Tech University Research Park Act Corporation (RPAC) and be the NM Tech’s Director of Venture Development within the Office of Innovation Commercialization (OIC).

Leads and directs efforts at the New Mexico Tech University Research Park Act Corporation, under the direction of the RPAC President. Leads and directs efforts at the New Mexico Tech Office of Innovation Commercialization under the direction of the Executive Director.

Help the NMT Research Park Act Corporation with the process of commercialization of NMT technologies. These activities will
include, but not be limited to:

  • Developing and maintaining licensing agreement forms and templates.
  • Maintain information flows between the OIC, the NMT Division of Research, the Office of the NMT President and the NMT Research Park Corporation.
  • Coordinate interactions and information flows between NMT inventors and the RPAC.
  • Develop a plan for voting actions on commercialization opportunities, such as licenses and/or other possible agreements. The RPAC should be able to act on these opportunities outside of regularly-scheduled meetings as needed to have an efficient process for responding to technology-monetization opportunities.

Many duties between the RPAC and OIC will overlap. OIC-related duties include:

  • Responsibility for the NMT Internal Patent Committee; expand that committee’s role to oversee all disclosures filed by NMT personnel and to explore coordination efforts between the OIC, the Office of Research and Centers for Scientific and Engineering Research & Testing, and the NMT Office of Academic Affairs.

In coordination with existing resources, establish and maintain relationships with private sector individuals, firms, and nonprofits for the purposes of furthering economic development in New Mexico with an emphasis on NMT-based expertise and technologies.

Continue faculty outreach with the express purpose of developing an innovation-to-commercialization pipeline at NMT. This will involve connecting NMT innovators and involving them with the NMT Innovation Commercialization process with goals of building and monetizing campus intellectual property (IP) and developing an entrepreneurial culture at NMT.

Identify potential Sponsored Research funding sources that can be used to develop NMT technologies for commercialization (in communication with Office of Research and Centers for Scientific and Engineering Research & Testing). Identify, cultivate, and work with potential private and public-sector entities that may invest in NMT technology development and develop startup
companies built around NMT innovations.

Communicate and coordinate intellectual property outcomes-related research and scholarly endeavors with the Office of Research and Centers for Scientific and Engineering Research & Testing.
Help initiate, develop and manage internal NMT-focused pre-seed and seed funds. This will involve helping develop and maintain legal documents, helping identify and present to prospective investors, and being the Fund Manager for one or both funds. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Master’s Degree required in any area of study. 10 years relevant experience in the technology-transfer field substitutable for Master’s Degree. Undergraduate degree in science or engineering preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills and ability to form collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and to help manage a Board of Directors in the context of multiple stakeholders. Ability to be an effective advocate on and off campus for the RPAC and for NMT activities connected to economic development, entrepreneurship and commercialization. Demonstrated ability to understand competing interests in a technology commercialization context and develop solutions acceptable to multiple parties. Demonstrated understanding of the process of initiating, developing and managing university technology pre-seed and seed funds. Demonstrated initiative, management skills, and ability to
think in an innovative manner regarding economic development matters that impact NMT. Experience in strategic planning process involving diverse constituencies. Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance at the secret or top-secret level.
