The University of Kentucky (UK) is the latest school to sign on for a two-year international program run by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to foster entrepreneurship and innovation.

MIT REAP, or Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program, will help UK design a regionally relevant plan to support entrepreneurs and the overall innovation ecosystem.

“Kentucky is already a top business environment for innovators and startups,” says Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin. “Our participation in this renowned program will make us even stronger.”

MIT REAP creates a collaborative environment for entrepreneurs, universities, government, companies and investors. Participants also gain access to MIT’s alumni network, which boasts some of the world’s greatest entrepreneurial success stories.

“This program promises to bring incredible value to our state, its innovation economy and to current and future start-ups,” says Brian Mefford, head of the entrepreneurship office at the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.

“We are already hard at work developing a forward-thinking system that serves our start-ups, traditional small businesses, innovation-driven entrepreneurs, and investors,” Mefford says. “MIT REAP’s proven initiative aligns perfectly with our goal of empowering founders to rapidly scale their companies, create jobs and advance the state’s economy.”

Other teams in the program include Monterrey, Mexico; Central Denmark; Guangzhou, China; Sydney, Australia; Leeds City, UK; and Campania, Italy.
