Halfway across the world, Boeing announced the opening of another new research center at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Like the Australian center, the new facility will pair Georgia Tech students and Boeing researchers, in this case with a focus on industrial automation.

“This advanced center will let Georgia Tech students collaborate with Boeing engineers to help drive the development of innovative factory automation solutions in aerospace,” said Greg Hyslop, Boeing’s chief technology officer.

Georgia Tech is no stranger to industry-funded innovation centers on campus, which now number 17. Tech has aggressively pursued innovation labs from private industry as a way to bolster its research capabilities and attract new research dollars to supplement government funds.

The flurry of new research and development centers and corporate campuses reflect the desire of companies to tap into Tech’s student and faculty talent. For Tech, the moves create a pipeline of jobs for graduates and possible private sector research dollars for the university at a time when federal research money is harder to find.
