Purdue University is opening a new $18.5 million center where students, staff and faculty can work to turn their design-related innovations into real-world products and companies. The Betchel Innovation Design Center will enable participants to develop conceptual designs, work on capstone projects, build prototypes and perform product testing.

“Purdue is already recognized for its strong pipeline of innovation, and we all recognize the importance of an innovator or start-up founder demonstrating a hands-on product in order to make a connection to investors and customers,” says Dan Hasler, chief entrepreneurial officer with the university’s tech transfer arm, the Purdue Research Foundation.

“Creating such a prototype or product can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor,” he adds. “The Betchel design center is a game-changer in filling this critical need at Purdue.”

The 31,000 square-foot building will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and will offer advanced tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters and electronics assembly.

“Designing and creating a prototype for a device is one of the most challenging aspects for an innovator,” says Kyle Hultgren, founder of life science start-up Image Medical Device and director of the Purdue University Center of Medication Safety Advancement. “The Betchel center will provide me and other innovators with a tremendous asset to advance our technologies.”

Gary Bertoline, dean of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, comments, “We have witnessed a tremendous increase in student engagement in design and creation of products and in start-up creation over the past three years. The Betchel design center provides them with a place to explore new ideas and put those ideas into action.”
