The University of Calgary (UCalgary) has appointed tech business executive Peter Garrett to serve as associate vice president of research and innovation (AVPR-I). In his new role, Garrett will promote commercialization, tech transfer, innovation and industry collaboration across UCalgary campuses and in the wider community. He will also help lead Innovative Calgary, which offers incubation services to UCalgary-based start-ups.

Garrett previously served as vice president of wireless research and development at Nortel and as CEO of Global Thermoelectric. He has been a board member of the Alberta Science and Research Authority, Calgary Technologies and several private companies. Garrett has also volunteered on several UCalgary committees and boards, such as the school of engineering’s external research advisory board.
