Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute sues Amazon over Alexa voice recognition technology

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and patent litigation firm Dynamic Advances are suing Amazon for infringing on a voice recognition technology that was developed at the school.

The lawsuit focuses on Alexa, the software that enables Amazon devices such as Echo and Fire TV to respond to questions posed by users. The suit also claims that Amazon has executives working in the area covered by the Albany federal court, where RPI filed the lawsuit.

“On information and belief, defendant’s employees within this district are directly involved in defendant’s direct infringement, including through the development, testing, demonstration, use and sale of the accused products within this district,” the lawsuit reads. According to lawyers for RPI and Dynamic Advances, the venue is ideal because Amazon sells its products in the region and is considering New York State to house its second headquarters.

The move to sue Amazon comes two years after Apple settled with RPI and Dynamic Advances for nearly $25 million over a patent that RPI says was vital to the invention of Apple’s Siri voice recognition technology.
