Katharine Ku, longtime executive director of the Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) at Stanford University, is retiring.

Ku joined the office in 1981 as a licensing associate and became executive director in 1991. She is an internationally recognized leader in tech transfer, and her published set of nine principles for university tech licensing has been followed by more than 120 institutions.

In her 27 years as executive director, Ku oversaw a dramatic expansion of OTL, more than doubling its staff and the income it has earned Stanford from licensing of university innovations. In 2001, the Association of University Technology Managers awarded her the Bayh-Dole Award for her work.

“More than a boss, [Ku is] a rare leader — energetic, amazingly even-tempered, sensible and practical, inspiring, creative, kind, persistent and fearless,” says Sally O’Neil, director of OTL’s Industrial Contracts Office, which Ku created.

Karin Immerluck, previously head of technology management at UC San Francisco, will take over as executive director of OTL.
