Cornell University has sign a cooperative research agreement with cleantech company alpha-Encorp to develop materials for next-generation lithium-based batteries. The research will be conducted at the Baker Laboratory under the direction of Héctor D. Abruña, a renowned electrochemist.

alpha-Encorp has patented a process of lithium thin film production that will be studied by Cornell’s lab to quantify capacity and ion transport, taking advantage of high-tech facilities available at Cornell – particularly observing, at the microscopic scale, lithium film growth as it happens in real time.

“Professor Abruña and his team at Cornell are one of the world’s finest for studying electrochemical phenomena,” explains Sam Pitroda, alpha-Encorp CEO, “and we are delighted to be working with them on this project.”

The project will provide the company with unprecedented insight into the lithium metal deposition process as it goes through simulated battery cycles. Ultimately, “successful completion will provide a compelling demonstration of alpha-Encorp’s unique capabilities for battery manufacturers exploring lithium metal anodes for their development of battery technology beyond lithium-ion,” Pitroda says.
