The University of Minnesota School of Nursing is partnering with a digital health business incubator to commercialize a mobile app for expectant parents of babies with heart defects.

Preparing Heart and Mind is a digital health education tool focused on unborn children diagnosed with congenital heart defects (CHDs). The app is based on extensive research led by UNM School of Nursing assistant professor Anne Chevalier McKechnie on the psychological toll faced by parents as they prepare for the birth of a child with CHD.

The app points to unhealthy behaviors such as parents isolating themselves from sources of support, failing to comprehend or retain diagnostic and treatment information, or ignoring their own health needs to focus on those of the unborn child. It offers interactive learning modules to help guide parents through the complicated and unpredictable process.

The university has partnered with health care company GetWellNetwork and its digital health incubator GetWell Labs, based in suburban Washington DC, to accelerate the app past the prototype stage and into the marketplace. Under the terms of the agreement, the app would be integrated into the company’s mobile health management tool GetWell Go. GetWellNetwork would also provide the U Minnesota inventors with commercialization support on research projects in the future.

“This partnership represents a promising opportunity to advance the standard of care in a context where no other mHealth or patient engagement products exist,” says McKechnie. “We are confident that GetWellNetwork is the right technology partner to help us further develop and commercialize our research.”
