Overview:

Rutgers spends more than $600 million annually on research that generates inventions with potential for commercial applications. The Office of Research Commercialization (“ORC”), which is part of the Office of Research and Economic Development (“ORED”), is responsible for assisting faculty and staff in identifying promising new innovations, developing and protecting intellectual property related to those innovations, and promoting their dissemination through commercial or other means.

In support of that mission, the ORC has launched a copyright licensing program. The program is dedicated to supporting faculty and staff in the identification and development of opportunities related to software and creative works (e.g., educational content, video, diagnostic instruments, and similar items.).

Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Licensing Manager (LM) for the Office of Research Commercialization. The Licensing Manager reports to the Assistant Director, Software and Creative Works Licensing. The LM is a member of a team responsible for assessing, marketing and licensing software and creative works created by the University’s researchers and staff.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Develops marketing materials in support of licensing opportunities based on copyrighted works.
  • Identifying targets and preparing marketing plans for those works.
  • Executes marketing plans to license and disseminate copyrighted works; and assists with (or performs) deal closure including drafting and negotiations of term sheets, licenses, confidentiality, and inter-institutional agreements.
  • Assesses and evaluates commercialization opportunities for copyright and software disclosures (and if appropriate, inventions) for their legal, technical, and commercial merit.
  • Manages an express website used to market and license software and copyrighted works; create and add marketing and license information, track, review and provide reports about usage.
  • Meets with, works closely with and assists faculty and staff in identifying, understanding, developing, and licensing copyrighted works.
  • Researches and develops relationships with industry partners, startups and external entities that may be interested in supporting and/or licensing Rutgers’ intellectual property.

Minimum Experience and Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, computer science, engineering, or science; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant business development, marketing, product development, licensing, IP management, technology commercialization or deal-making in academic or industry environment.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Independent self-starter and a team player.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of intellectual property.
  • Organized with ability to prioritize effectively and manage multiple opportunities with competing deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (e.g., M.Sc., MBA).
  • Working knowledge of open source licenses, copyright, and intellectual property fundamentals.
  • Hands on experience with Internet Marketing Tools and Web Analytics; for example Constant
  • Contact, Social Network Marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Google Analytics.
  • Experience in the publishing industry.
  • Prior experience within a university technology transfer or licensing intellectual property.
  • Broad scientific knowledge or experience in multiple technical areas would be useful and desirable. Candidate should be curious and value exposure to and learning about new technology, concepts, people, and organizations.
