Swedish biopharma company BioArctic has signed an expanded research agreement with Uppsala University that will fund a three-year research position. The deal expands on an existing partnership that is focused on developing a new type of PET ligand to enhance brain-imaging.

As part of the new agreement, Uppsala researchers will focus on developing technologies for antibody-based PET imaging of the brain in Alzheimer patients.

“We look forward to continuing the research collaboration with Uppsala University regarding new PET ligands based on our antibodies,” said BioArctic CEO Gunilla Osswald. “This initiative is of importance to the entire field of Alzheimer research. We hope that the results will contribute to improved diagnosis of Alzheimer patients in the future and thus to a more effective treatment.”

Alzheimer’s disease is notoriously hard to diagnose, and the research will attempt to both enhance diagnostic capabilities and better evaluate the effect of pharmacological treatment in the long run.
