• Abigail Barrow, interim executive director of the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Office of Technology Commercialization and Ventures (OCTV), is stepping down later this month. Barrow joined UMass in 2004 as founding director of the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center.

Based in OCTV, the center promotes the commercialization of research through industry collaboration and start-up formation. Barrow has served as interim executive director of OCTV for the past three and a half years. As part of a transition plan, the university has brought on a strategic advisor who will provide 10 months of consulting services related to economic development.

• Virginia Tech has named tech transfer veteran Brandy Salmon to serve as associate vice president for innovation and partnerships. Salmon currently serves as executive director of LINK, the university’s center for industry partnerships. In her new role, she will continue in her leadership of LINK while also guiding LAUNCH, Virginia Tech’s new start-up incubation center.

Prior to her work at the university, Salmon served as director of RTI International, where she consulted federal and corporate clients and directed a global tech accelerator sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She has also served as associate director of the Office of Licensing and Ventures at Duke University.
