Israeli start-up develops technology that allows doctors to perform ultrasounds remotely

A spinout from Ariel University in Israel is developing a breakthrough ultrasound technology that could allow doctors to examine their patients remotely.

According to Adi Baruch, co-founder and CEO of iNNOGING Medical, ultrasound exams are performed at such sheer volume that only about 15% are done by the actual diagnosing physician, leaving the rest to trained technicians. This means the doctors are often reviewing recorded images or video clips instead of seeing the full picture in real time.

The technology behind iNNOGING converts an ultrasound video into a 3D model that doctors can explore through the company’s Probe & Pad hardware, which can be attached to any computer and is identical to the transducer used in a live ultrasound exam.

“It’s like the patient is sitting right there getting a real-time exam,” says Baruch.

The technology was initially developed in the lab of Ariel researcher Nir Shvalb, who envisioned the device as a training simulator for student doctors and technicians to use at home. Baruch, a medical device expert, saw the opportunity for the technology to help current doctors, increase diagnostic accuracy and reduce medical costs.

“For example,” says Baruch, “checking a baby in utero can take a long time, and if the doctor doesn’t have adequate time during the appointment, or failed to capture certain angles, it can be done later with our technology.”

iNNOGING is now seeking doctors and radiologists to join its advisory board, and is looking to hire more software developers to help the company expand. Baruch says the technology could become available to doctors in the U.S. within three years, pending FDA approval.
