Ikove Venture Partners, a Midwest investment firm that focuses on early-stage technologies coming out of research institutions, has launched its first start-up fund.

The $10 million Startup Nursery (SUN) Fund is intended to help launch 10 to 15 early-stage tech companies by bridging the gap between the lab and the marketplace.

“While $70 billion is invested annually into university-backed research in labs across the country, less than one percent is invested in commercializing these life-changing ideas,” says Ikove co-founder Flavio Lobato. “With the launch of the SUN Fund, we’re looking forward to scaling our efforts in fulfillment of our mission of unlocking the potential of technology commercialization, bringing to life disruptive technologies that deserve to be shared with humanity.”

Ikove’s venture development model involves partnering with inventors and research institutions to launch new companies around intellectual property. Since 2014, the firm as formed 10 start-ups and created more than $150 million in equity value. The SUN Fund will enable Ikove to expand its outreach to help more start-ups overcome the commercialization gap, the firm says.

Ikove co-founder Rodolfo Bellesi comments, “The SUN Fund affords us the opportunity to realize the substantial pipeline of technologies we’ve identified which have the potential to influence and evolve how we live our day-to-day lives.”
