The Director of Industry Contracts and Commercialization is a new position, representing a new era at Chapman University. This position is ideal for someone who wants the benefits of a small university community, as well as the opportunity to start, lead and grow the Chapman University’s research arm.
The Director of Industry Contracts and Commercialization plays a critical role in enhancing Chapman University’s research infrastructure, developing industry research partnerships and protecting new innovations. This position will report to the Vice President for Research and will have responsibility for negotiating industry agreements including MTA’s, CDA’s and federal contracts and develop technology commercialization.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide overall responsibility for advancing industry partnerships and executing appropriate agreements.
• Work with faculty in appropriate schools/colleges to develop industry partnerships and administrative units (i.e., Sponsored Projects Services and Legal Affairs) to negotiate and execute appropriate agreements including research, service, MTAs, NDAs, Data Use, Facility Use, etc..
• Provide overall responsibility for Intellectual Property management and commercialization. This includes working with faculty on understanding the commercialization process, handling disclosures, working with Legal Affairs on patent filing, managing the IP Committee, and looking for opportunities for licensing with outside partners.
• Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive education, training and outreach programs for research active faculty, administrators, academic personnel, staff and students to ensure proper adherence with regulatory requirements and current best practices for industry research and commercialization. Prepare and submit reports as needed for external and internal purposes.
• Be a team player and collaborator with the Vice President for Research.


• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and five years of experience and professional expertise in a research-oriented university environment or similar complex research setting or any equivalent combination.
• Demonstrated knowledge of federal regulations and the regulatory environment governing research administration in the conduct of academic research, grants and contracts.
• Interaction with federal agencies, industries, and other nonprofits.
• Broad knowledge of grants and contracts administration and budget management.
• Experience with intellectual property management.
• Experience in creating or enhancing research infrastructure resulting in visible increase in contracts, grants, research and/or intellectual property productivity.
• Demonstrated track record of developing and successfully deploying policies and procedures.
• Demonstrated analytical skills.
• Technical skills to have the ability to learn and use enterprise systems and tools necessary for the position.
• Ability to use diplomacy and tact, and work with confidential information.
• Ability to interpret and ensure university and department policies and procedures.
• Proficiency and current knowledge of computer technology in the administration of intellectual property and/or sponsored programs.
