General Purpose: 

The Office of Cooperative Research’s (OCR) mission is to foster commercial investment in the development of inventions and discoveries flowing from the faculty research at Yale and encouraging entrepreneurship from ideas generated at the university.  In accomplishing its mission, OCR seeks to support the research and education missions of Yale, enhances the reputation of the university and catalyzes local economic development.

The Communications & Marketing Officer supports OCR by communicating and marketing stories, initiatives, programs, and events via traditional channels such as websites, newsletters, publications, email outreaches, and media, as well as by maintaining a strong social media presence.  This position will work closely with office colleagues, in particular the internal program directors, to understand the particular program’s messaging & communication needs and goals.   The position will also work with other partners such as Yale’s Office of Public Affairs & Communications (OPAC), media outlets, and related professional organizations to help leverage stories or events from our department to the wider community.

The Communications & Marketing Officer position requires strategic thinking, but has a strong day to day tactical focus.  From a tactical perspective, the Communications & Marketing Officer will be expected to manage & develop lists of particular groups (i.e. faculty, departments, venture capitalists, industry partners, etc.) for targeted outreaches, to ensure our outward messaging & information is always current (i.e. websites), to produce fresh content each month, to communicate with our internal/external constituents consistently, and to market & support events the office is running throughout the year.  From a strategic perspective, these tactical elements need to be implemented in a dynamic way to foster engagement, effectiveness, and continuity.  

Required Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to translate innovative scientific research and faculty enterprises into compelling stories. Ability create and publish content and participate in the content strategy process.
  • Proven strong graphic design capabilities and event organization and promotion experience.
  • Excellent oral & written communication. Proven ability to create clear messaging communicated to a target audience, using the appropriate tone. This encompasses communication in writing, online via digital channels, and verbally.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce creative and compelling communication pieces.
  • Strong understanding of social media, website management and email marketing. Demonstrated ability to be adept at social media. Analytical skills and agile with analytic tools such as Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Hubspot, Pardot, Marketo, Optimizely, etc.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Self-starting disposition, comfort with initial lack of structure and ability to create structure in a rapidly changing environment, scientific or business background
