As an Intellectual Property Business Analyst, you will support the mission and responsibilities of the Office of the General Counsel (“OGC”) with respect to the intellectual property (“IP”) revenue and expense management at HHMI. Working at our headquarters, you will analyze reports of expenses incurred and payments received relating to the commercialization of inventions generated in the laboratories of HHMI scientists located at research institutions located throughout the U.S. The ideal candidate for this position loves to crunch numbers, pays acute attention to detail, and has a strong knowledge of general accounting principles. You will use all these qualities to analyze reports and to check that HHMI is paying and receiving amounts in accordance with our existing agreements with the research institutions that host HHMI scientists (“host institutions”).

Primary responsibilities include: managing the allocation of IP revenue and expenses to the appropriate HHMI invention; reconciling IP revenue and expense transactions for HHMI inventions with records in HHMI’s ERP financial system; processing invention-related invoices for payment; maintaining the OGC’s IP revenue management database; generating routine reports and responding to ad hoc queries; assisting in the implementation of HHMI’s IP revenue and expenses management controls; and making recommendations for process improvements. As a member of OGC’s collaborative and skilled team, you will work with other OGC staff, HHMI’s Finance team, and personnel in host institutions technology transfer and accounting departments to efficiently and effectively resolve issues relating to IP revenue and expense management, including tracking down relevant documentation and resolving discrepancies in accounting. You will report to and work under the general supervision of the Director, Legal Operations.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a business/accounting orientation preferred
  • At least three years of related business/accounting experience, preferably in an academic technology transfer setting; experience processing royalty payments a plus

Skills and Abilities

  • Motivated, with high personal and professional standards of integrity and ethics
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making skills
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications with advanced proficiency in Excel, and experience using an ERP system, databases, and procurement solutions
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles
  • Strong attention to detail and highly organized
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight as well as collaboratively with all levels of personnel
  • Creativity and positive attitude
