Romanian universities partner with companies for research, training programs

University-industry engagement is a global activity, and Romania is getting into the act. Several Romanian universities have recently announced partnerships with international and local companies.

The Gheorghe Asachi Technical University (GATU) in Iași is working with German technology company Continental on a research project called PRORETA, alongside the Technical University of Darmstadt and the University of Bremen. The project is focused on one of the most daunting challenges associated with autonomous vehicles — recognizing complex traffic situations in inner cities, and how algorithms from sensor data can deduce the correct driving decisions in these situations. At an unregulated intersection, for example, it is a challenge to correctly interpret all objects related to the intended direction of travel — including their direction of movement, intention, and priority — without human intervention, the company explained. The project will test AI methods for situations in which traditional approaches don’t suffice. The GATU researchers will work on using AI to predict the behavior of other road users.

Meanwhile, Dunărea de Jos University in Galaţi has signed a research partnership with BlueSpace Technology focused on drone technologies for use in mapping, supervision, and defense applications.

And the Bucharest Technical University of Constructions has partnered with Romania’s public road company CNAIR. The five-year partnership covers the development of master’s and doctoral programs based on the company’s projects, a series of internships for students, and scholarships. The agreement also will fund research around road infrastructure.
