A start-up from Stony Brook University (SBU) has developed high-speed, high-resolution 3D-scanning technologies and advanced 3D-image modeling software for healthcare and other industries.

Founded by SBU researchers, Orchid Imaging recently won the top prize at the State University of New York (SUNY) Startup Summer School (S4) Class of 2021 Demo Day. The company will receive a $10,000 stipend as well as follow-up support from SUNY experts who will help Orchid create strong grant proposals and further develop its business.

153 SUNY students and faculty members from 22 campuses competed in S4 this year — a 20% increase over the program’s Class of 2020 event. SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras says this is evidence that innovation and entrepreneurship are alive and well across the university system.

“I’m excited by what we’re doing, and we need to do more,” Malatras adds. “This is where we give students — no matter their background — opportunities to succeed. Programs like the SUNY Startup Summer School help to give our students, faculty and staff opportunities where they wouldn’t have them otherwise.”
