Program manager and project coordinator at the School of Energy Resources, University of Wyoming

 

Program manager and project coordinator within the Center for carbon Capture and Conversion (CCCC) located in the School of Energy Resources, University of Wyoming. Focus areas include the scaling up and commercializing proven technology solutions related to the processing and conversion of coal to make value added non-fuel and energy products, coal beneficiation, carbon dioxide capture and utilization.

Research Scientists are academic professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct and support research. UW Regulation 2-7 describes the activities that fall into this set of responsibilities for faculty; the same definition of research applies to Academic Professionals.

JOB PURPOSE

Manages center funded technology development projects that concern scaling up, field demonstration and commercialization of proven technology solutions related to Wyoming coal. Working closely with Center funded Faculty, research scientists and third-party technology providers, responsibilities include devising strategies and implementing plans to transfer technology out of the laboratory and demonstrate solutions in the field. Scopes related initiatives, defining budgets and managing projects through to commercialization. Works and engages with industry proponents to support commercialization objectives. Leads submittal responses to external agency requests for funding proposal (RFP) development and apprehends external funding opportunities in the coal to non- fuel and energy products and clean-combustion interest areas. Working with other Center members and supporting the Director, administers and coordinates project activities, in designated area of interest.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

The successful candidate will be expected to drive forward technology development based upon proven research results and progress. Working both independently and in a collaborative fashion with other professionals, specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Coordinating technology development, scale-up and demonstration projects that intersect the field of process engineering and conversion, such as coal beneficiation, coal derived-products manufacture, clean combustion and carbon dioxide capture and disposition.
  2. Develops technology transfer strategies and plans to take proven technology solutions from the laboratory thru’ scale-up, field demonstration to commercialization.
  3. Works with technology partners and industry stakeholders to effect diversification opportunities and create new industries in Wyoming
  4. Project management, including budget preparation, business case development and the implementation and operation of stage gated decision making.
  5. Preparation of periodic project status reports and presentations.
  6. Compiling and preparing proposals in response to external agency funding opportunities.
  7. Conduct technology techno-economic appraisals to support scale up and commercialization activities.
  8. Serves as Center authority in preserving and managing intellectual property (IP), technology transfer and commercialization. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Post Graduate (minimum Msc) degree in a relevant field (chemical, chemical engineering, mechanical, process engineering, chemistry), with at least 20 years post-graduation experience within the field of research and technology development.
  • Demonstrated minimum 10 years industrial or commercial experience working in the field of technology management centered upon commercialization to include scale up and demonstrations of ‘new’ technology.
  • Familiarity with coal and/or petroleum processing.
  • Active in the field of technology transfer and intellectual property management
  • Candidates applying should be able to demonstrate exposure to research and technology program management and drafting successful research proposals in response to requests for Proposals (RFP’s) from award and grant awarding bodies. 
  • Demonstrated experience in soliciting, engaging and achieving stakeholder engagement to promote and progress technology transfer and commercialization,
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written), and three strongly supportive letters of recommendation from direct supervisors or their superiors are required.  
  • Valid driver’s license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Business degree e.g. MBA.
  • Experience working with coal processing to make value added products
  • Familiarity with combustion and carbon capture technology. Knowledgeable in coal/petroleum chemistry, synthesis of product formulations and development.
  • Familiarity with process models (e.g. Aspen +) and experimental design is desirable.
  • Being able to show practice in an industrial setting is also a plus.
