When the University of Akron launched its national research center for precision manufacturing in April, it had no dedicated physical space, but a $3 million donation from the Timken Foundation is changing that. The university announced the gift last week, and it will begin work building out the newly renamed Timken Foundation Center for Precision Manufacturing.

“This center represents an important new asset to develop talent and conduct more advanced manufacturing research, both of which will keep the industrial sector on the cutting edge,” said Ward J. Timken, president of the Timken Foundation.

“Thanks to the Timken Foundation’s financial support, we can provide a single space for research and student education, while contributing to workforce development for the manufacturing industry,” said Ajay Mahajan, PhD, associate dean for research and industrial engagement for UA’s College of Engineering and Polymer Science.

The center’s focus is on linking faculty and students with industry to develop advanced methods for process technologies, such as grinding. Siamak Farhad, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is serving as interim director.

Students in the College of Engineering and Polymer Science will take part in research at the site. The center also will emphasize “Industry 4.0,” including research on robotics, automation and smart sensors, digital manufacturing, and machine connectivity.

Employees of industry partners can also use the center for their own training programs, and industry staff will be able to work directly in the center’s labs.

“Manufacturing isn’t going anywhere, and we are seeing an increase in companies who want to hire our graduates or work with our researchers to design ways to improve products and processes,” said Craig Menzemer, interim dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science.
