Salary range: $92,996 – 116,240 (Commensurate with experience and consistent with UHN Compensation Policy)

University Health Network (UHN) is looking for an experienced professional to fill the key role of Licensing & Commercialization Professional to drive and grow our biobank, biomaterial, questionnaire, and clinical tool non exclusive license portfolio in our Commercialization at UHN department.

Located at the heart of Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District, Commercialization at UHN professionals manage the intellectual property developed by research scientists and clinicians and work with industry partners and investors to maximize the value of the technology to improve world heath and sustain medical research. Commercialization at UHN consolidates separate business functions (licensing, research agreement contracting, patenting, marketing, alliance management, accelerator fund management, commercial analysis and start-up company formation) into a unified office to facilitate interactions with corporate partners, and embeds dedicated Licensing Professional staff within the UHN Research Institutes to coordinate activities between Commercialization at UHN and these centres of innovation.

The role of Licencing & Commercialization Professional, Biomaterials and Clinical Tools, requires a dynamic, creative, business development professional with skills in relationship management and academic credentials or experience in the Life Sciences or Medical Technology fields.

The Professional will focus on growing the existing successful non-exclusive license portfolio that currently represents a significant part of UHN’s commercialization activities and revenues. He or she will develop and implement strategies to foster and maximize the commercial success of UHN’s vast repository of biobank and other biomaterials, questionnaires, clinical tools, and other assets and will grow and leverage internal and external relationships to facilitate and encourage the identification, development, commercialization, and transfer to practical use of such assets and technologies across the entire UHN organization.

Key responsibilities include: working within a team environment to grow the existing successful non-exclusive license portfolio; supporting research activities; developing research partnerships; driving licensing agreements by encouraging, directing, and facilitating the identification, development, commercialization, and transfering to practical use of UHN non-exclusive assets and technologies; proactively engaging UHN clinicians and researchers to identify research tools or assets with commercial potential; preparing IP disclosures; developing strategies and marketing materials; and transacting corporate contracts. 


  • Completion of a Master’s degree in Life Sciences or Medical Technology, or equivalent experience required; PhD or MBA highly preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant business experience or equivalent
  • Experience working in pharmaceutical or biotech business development, technology transfer, venture capital or related environment preferred; excellent knowledge of biotechnology and pharmaceutical markets required
  • Very good capacity for understanding and evaluating detailed legal agreements and knowledge of licensing practice with experience in the negotiation of licensing deals required
  • Good knowledge of patent practice preferred; knowledge of internet patent and other database searches desirable
  • Must demonstrate outstanding communication and collaboration skills, and be able to represent the values of the Commercialization team including the provision of excellent client service
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize while working under pressure with tight deadlines is required
  • Self-starter with demonstrated history of taking initiatives is required
  • Strong presentation skills required
  • Ability and comfort communicating to a range of stakeholders, from researchers to CEO’s, from a business and science perspective
