Orange Grove Bio, a drug investment and development firm in Ohio, is partnering with the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to commercialize new therapeutics targeting a range of diseases including cancer.

Through the partnership, Orange Grove will provide funding and commercialization expertise to help bring Pitt medicines from the lab to the marketplace. The firm will also provide guidance to Pitt researchers who wish to launch new start-ups based on their discoveries.

Joe Havrilla, associate vice chancellor of innovation and entrepreneurship at Pitt, says the partnership reflects a shift in how drugs are being developed.

“It is the direction that a lot of early-stage investment and drug development firms are moving,” says Havrilla. “Their model is to build a start-up around a technology. We’re very, very happy with this.”

Orange Grove currently has partnerships with about 50 universities, but few are as extensive as its new partnership with Pitt, according to Orange Grove CEO Marc Appel. “Pittsburgh has a lot of potential,” he adds. “It’s a huge research center.”

Under the partnership, Pitt will hold the patents for technologies developed by its researchers, while Orange Grove will have exclusive licensing rights.
