Assistant Director, Office of Innovation & Technology Commercialization at LSU

 

Job Description:

The Assistant Director of the Office of Innovation & Technology Commercialization is responsible for assisting the Director in managing, encouraging, and supporting the development, disclosure, protection, marketing, and licensing of institutional inventions and intellectual property. Primarily focused on the day-to-day operations of the office and the management of faculty training and marketing outreach of intellectual property. 

Job Responsibilities:

Build and maintain strong working relationships with faculty, students, and research administration across LSU departments, colleges, and research centers. Prepare educational materials, presentations, and provide professional training to inventors and other university stakeholders to help commercialize new technologies. Work with faculty to develop strong understanding of faculty research projects and commercialization potential of research projects. (25%)

Work with LSU faculty, inventors, ITC staff, and IP attorneys to evaluate inventions for patentability and commercial potential. Help prepare, file, and prosecute LSU intellectual property (including provisional and non-provisional patent applications, trademark applications, and copyrights) in conjunction with approved outside attorney firms, as appropriate. Maintain appropriate intellectual property documentation in shared resources and databases. (20%)

Manage a diversified intellectual property portfolio to enhance commercialization outcomes and benefit the public through translation of LSU innovations from research labs to market. Work diligently to license LSU intellectual property through as many channels as available. Manage execution of license agreements while ensuring compliance with federal laws, state laws, LSU bylaws and regulations a LSU policies. Coordinate and supervise processing of confidentiality agreements (CDAs), material transfer agreements (MTAs), inter-institutional agreements, data use agreements, and other similar types of agreements associated with technology transfer activities.  (20%)

Proactively develop and implement marketing strategies and goals for LSU intellectual property. Create non-confidential promotional materials for new technologies, research capabilities, and expertise. Promote technologies through university and third-party websites/databases and brochures and engages directly with interested industry partners and collaborators. Collect, analyze, and share information from technology marketing activities with LSU inventors and direct technology marketing plans based on industry feedback. Leverage in-house resources, and work with LSU marketing and communication staff on technology outreach and marketing. (20%)

Provide training to ITC staff as appropriate and necessary. Work with intellectual property databases and other shared resources and software systems. Process appropriate forms and documents necessary for the commercialization of LSU intellectual property. Participate in preparing commercialization progress reports to appropriate stakeholders at LSU and various partners in the community. Work with the ITC director to achieve year-over-year revenue and metric improvements based upon research outputs from researchers at LSU.  (10%)

Other duties as assigned by the ITC Director or Associate Vice President for Research – Innovation & Ecosystem Development as necessary. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in STEM or Business related field and five (5) years of related experience. At least 2 year experience in technology transfer, product development, business development, marketing, early stage company formation, startups, or technology licensing. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph. D in STEM or Business Field, M.B.A., and/or J.D. and 10 years of related experience. At least 3 years experience in a university setting assisting in the management of the technology transfer process, product development, business development, marketing, early stage company formation, startups, or technology licensing. 

Physical Demands:

Physical ability and eye-hand coordination necessary to use a computer terminal, copier, telephone and other standard office equipment; ability to sit in the same position for extended periods (5.5+ hours a day) at a time using continuous hand motions when entering data into the computer system.

Due to the nature of the position and / or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to and pre-employment screenings (drug screen, physical, and background check) as required by LSU FASOP HR-04 and PS-67. LSU requires the COVID-19 vaccine for all students, faculty, and staff or mandatory monthly testing. New employees must either submit proof of vaccination by October 15, 2021 or within three (3) days of their official start date, otherwise be entered into the mandatory monthly testing protocol beginning in November 2021.
