The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has expanded its start-up program to support nearly 500 companies, making it the largest start-up community in Australia.

The UTS Startups program offers workspace, mentorship, industry networking opportunities and other resources to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Start-ups in the program generated 442 paid jobs in 2021, and the program worked with 952 UTS students through internships and hands-on projects offering them real-world experience in entrepreneurship.

According to UTS officials, the university’s emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship is attracting the next generation of start-up founders, with over half of the incoming students in 2021 saying they wanted to pursue entrepreneurship during their degree.

Murray Hurps, Director of Entrepreneurship at UTS, comments, “I’m deeply proud that UTS has the desire and capability to build a virtuous cycle of peer learning and inspiration at scale to ensure this number continues to rise and converts into growing employment and learning outcomes.”
