Director, Technology Transfer and New Ventures – Stevens Institute of Technology

One of the central tenets of the Stevens mission is that solutions to many of today’s critical societal problems can be addressed through advanced research and technology development/ commercialization. Reporting to the Vice Provost of Research and Innovation, the Director of Technology Transfer and New Ventures will lead the continuing development and exploitation of the University’s intellectual property portfolio and will play a significant role in implementing the innovation and entrepreneurship components of the University’s Strategic Plan. Specifically, the Director’s key responsibilities include:
- Manage the licensing, startup, and entrepreneurial functions of the Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship and serve as a liaison between the Office and the business and research community.
- Lead efforts for developing startup and entrepreneurial opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
- Facilitate faculty driven startup activities and new venture creation by working with faculty founders, business entrepreneurs, investors, industry partners and other parties.
- Educate faculty on small business innovation research funding and other opportunities for funding.
- Maintain and build relationships with business partners and investors.
- Develop strategies for licensing in focus areas based upon the University’s research (e.g., perform technology valuations, technology marketing and market assessments).
- Serve as a resource for information about patents and licensing and promote recognition that such functions are meaningful and valuable aspects of university life by planning and implementing programs to stimulate innovative research and intellectual property disclosure among faculty and staff.
- Manage the activities of the Stevens Venture Center by interacting with member companies and Entrepreneurs in Residence.
- Assess the current patent portfolio of the University and develop a management strategy for underexploited intellectual property and a strategy for future patent prosecution.
- Provide guidance on intellectual property issues; engage with attorneys for new patent filings, analyses, responses to Office Actions and Restriction Requirements; comply with federal regulations requiring the submission of reports to federal sponsors.
- Strengthen and broaden opportunities for Stevens’ relationship with external partners and resources across the state and the region (e.g., NYC Innovation Hub, R&D Council NJ, TechUnited: NJ, BioNJ, NJ CSIT) to identify and engage with opportunities for commercialization and in support of Stevens’ mission.
- Work closely with Stevens Office of General Counsel to coordinate effective integration between the functions of the two offices.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a high level of knowledge of science and technology developments and demonstrated knowledge in one or more scientific disciplines as evidenced by an advanced science, engineering or other relevant degree.
Required:
- Five or more years of experience in licensing, technical entrepreneurship, corporate business development, and/or venture capital investments.
Preferred:
- PhD or MBA is preferred.
Salary:
- The target salary for this role is $150,000-$200,000.
