Position Description

The Industry Partnership & Commercialization (IP&C) office at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) champions the development and commercialization of SickKids’ technologies. To achieve this goal, we foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, we forge commercial partnerships, and we help to build start-up companies based on our innovations

The IP&C team is looking for a strategic, high-energy, and driven licensing professional to join as Director, Licensing and Industry Partnerships. In this role, you will:

  • Champion strategic partnerships with large corporate partners, in collaboration with other teams at SickKids
  • Drive high-value licensing deals with large pharma/biotech, diagnostics companies, and spin-out companies
  • Develop and support commercialization strategies for SickKids technologies/innovations with greatest commercial potential
  • Provide guidance and support to researchers at SickKids in translating their laboratory and clinical research excellence into commercial products for the public benefit
  • Lead a small team of licensing/business development professionals to help achieve organizational technology/innovation commercialization goals and objectives

Here’s What You’ll Get To Do:

  • Develop and nurture relationships with corporate partners in industry to understand their pipelines and, needs, and to build collaborative initiatives
  • Lead a team that evaluates the commercial potential, viability and patentability of new inventions, , identifying new uses, potential markets, market sizes and competing technologies using personal knowledge of industry needs and emerging technologies, information developed from network of experts (Key Opinion Leaders, mentors and entrepreneurs-in-residence), on-line databases, internal tools and programs
  • Establish and cultivate strong relationships with researchers to discuss technology development, innovation, criteria for IP&C office investment in intellectual property to support commercialization
  • Work with select researchers, IP&C team members and partner organizations to mature and advance most-promising SickKids technology projects and develop commercialization strategies for these opportunities
  • Solicit interest in developed SickKids’ technologies through strategic processes (“marketing”) with potential partner companies, partner organizations, and/or investors
  • Drive negotiation, drafting (working with Legal), and execution of non-disclosure agreements, license options, licenses and partnership agreements
  • Provide coaching, mentorship and supervision for Business Development Associates and/or Business Development Analysts. Recruit team members as required. Develop team objectives and evaluate performance.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Advanced university degree in life sciences (MSc, PhD, MD or similar)
  • MBA is preferred
  • CLP designation is an asset
  • A strategic and collaborative mindset and approach to partnerships with industry and ecosystem partners
  • A high degree of energy and passion for commercialization of early-stage technologies
  • Positive outlook, sense of urgency, multi-tasker, works well under pressure, independently and is a great team player
  • 10+ years of industry work experience or reputable technology transfer office experience, knowledge of intellectual property
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in licensing technologies (deal sheet to be provided) and drafting/negotiation of agreements, including NDAs and commercial licenses 
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to respond to inquiries from internal and external parties, have candid, firm and respectful conversations with Principal Investigators and researchers

What’s Desired:

  • Experience in commercializing diverse life sciences related technologies
  • Previous responsibility for people and portfolio management
  • An understanding of early product development
  • Existing relationships with pharma/biotech/investors
  • Prior experience in market research and business case preparation 
  • Ability to understand and discuss scientific foundations of life sciences technology development (genomics, pharmaceuticals, etc.)
  • An understanding of the academic research environment
  • Experience working effectively in a large organization or corporation
