Vanderbilt venture funding arm chooses three faculty-led start-ups for investment

Discovery Vanderbilt, the venture funding arm of Vanderbilt University, is investing in three faculty-led start-ups as part of its mission to boost innovation and entrepreneurship across the university.

The start-ups include HeroWear, which develops wearable devices to alleviate back strain and injuries; IDBiologics, a biotech start-up developing antibodies to treat major infectious diseases including Covid-19; and Virtuoso, which has developed a robotic surgery system that enables physicians to overcome the limitations of traditional endoscopes.

“These three initial investments will fuel discovery and accelerate the translation of our research into real-world benefits,” says Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. “I look forward to the innovations that will grow from these partnerships, and to future investments by the committee that are sure to push new ideas into the frontiers of discovery while underscoring our continued service to others and community.”

C. Cybele Raver, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Vanderbilt, comments, “Funding groundbreaking faculty-led start-ups like HeroWear, IDBiologics and Virtuoso is central to the purpose of Discovery Vanderbilt and allows us to extend the impact of our research and innovation locally, nationally and globally.”
