Emory University Licensing Associate


Work for one of the top private, liberal arts research universities in the country located in Atlanta, Georgia! Emory University has exclusively retained the Vortechs Group to find their next great Licensing Associate.

The Licensing Associate will have the unique opportunity to work with innovations received from Emory’s world-renowned faculty and shepherd them from the lab bench into the hands of a commercial partner. The ideal candidate should represent themselves internally and to the outside community as a confident, visible, and innovative leader in technology transfer.

More specifically, the Licensing Associate will triage and market early stage University-developed technology to industry, negotiate terms and conditions with potential licensees and monitor licensee’s obligations. The position is responsible for arranging for and managing patent filings, copyright or trademark registration as appropriate in coordination with the inventors, authors and intellectual property counsel. Portfolio decisions will be vetted using the office’s team-oriented approach to case management.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Educating and encouraging invention disclosures from faculty and staff.  
  • Evaluating disclosures to ensure accurate completion by the inventor(s)/researcher(s).
  • Verifying the status of published results or anticipated publications on the invention. Marketing and identifying potential licensees.
  • Evaluating the commercial value of the invention.
  • Negotiating terms and conditions, including royalties, with potential licensees.
  • Monitoring licensees’ obligations to meet agreed upon milestones in licensed technologies.
  • Managing accounts associated with patent, copyright and licensing areas.
  • Maintaining meticulous records associated with his/her technology portfolio.


  • PhD or JD, or a master’s degree plus one year of patent and/or licensing experience required.
  • Degree and/or work experience in health sciences and business/industry is desired.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and meet the needs of a wide range of faculty, staff and stakeholders including those within the Emory community, industry, and government.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.
